Testimonials from IV Programme Alumni
"The IV Programme brings people together - some are already friends, some are new contacts - and together, we share an intimate learning experience of Canadian publishing and culture. It's a wonderful venue to bounce ideas around and actually have the time to talk creatively instead of the nuts and bolts, dollars and cents.'
- Mary Anne Thompson (IV Fellow, 2013), Mary Anne Thompson Associates
"The IV Programme exceeded all expectations for me in terms of business productivity, networking, education about Canadian publishing and sheer enjoyment. The festival events brought me in contact with so many fascinating and creative Canadian publishers. Already I have several exciting projects on my desk; I would never have heard of them had I not been visiting in October. I’ve now made lifelong friends with some of my fellow IVs and I anticipate sharing books with them in the future."
- Tom Mayer (IV Fellow, 2012), W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.
"I thought the program was a tremendous success. We were beautifully taken care of from the rides to and from the airport, the spectacular hotel, the myriad office visits to publishers and agencies, the unbelievably well organized dinners for a crowd. Even the speed-dating with unknown but potential future partners was invigorating.
Best of all were the Harbourfront evenings themselves, of course. The readings and panels and theatre and interviews were dazzling and unlike any similar event in the US. We have much to learn from your elegant performances."
- Elisabeth Schmitz (IV Fellow, 2011), Grove/Atlantic, Inc.
“I thought the IV Programme at Harbourfront 2011 was superb, and I am confident the other fellows felt likewise. It enabled me to catch up with authors I hadn't seen for some years, such as Michael Ondaatje and Russell Banks, and to meet a number of authors I hadn't met, such as Kim Thúy, in the most agreeable and relaxed of settings. I came across the excellent work of Michael Helm and read a fine first novel, The Lion Seeker. Similarly with publisher and agent colleagues, I spent time with Louise Dennys [Random House of Canada] and Ellen Seligman [McClelland & Stewart Ltd.], and met a lot of new people I know I will remain in touch with. Meeting people in their offices is somehow more valuable than the usual book fair meetings."
- Geoffrey Mulligan (IV Fellow, 2011), The Clerkenwell Press
“The IV Programme provides a unique insight into the workings of the Canadian publishing scene. In just a few superbly organized days we met with agents, publishers, booksellers and authors and I came home with stronger relationships, and new ideas for future avenues of cooperation with the Canadian publishing industry. Thank you Toronto!”
- Ziv Lewis (IV Fellow, 2010), Kinneret Zmora Dvir Publishing House Ltd.
"What a meticulously organized, generous and wonderful programme this is. I highly recommend it as a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the Canadian publishing community. The fact that it takes place in conjunction with the Harbourfront Festival makes for an intense, adrenalin-fueled few days of literary heaven."
- Judy Clain (IV Fellow, 2010), Little, Brown and Company
“What a delight to be invited to Toronto to the Harbourfront International Festival of Authors. Mingling with an astonishing line-up of writers, I was reminded of what it felt like to be somewhere that truly celebrates international literary culture and is justly proud of their own.”
- Clare Alexander (Distinguished Guest, 2008), Aitken, Alexander Associates Ltd., The Bookseller
“In its very first year, the programme felt like it was already part of the establishment, mainly because of its flawless organization…I was very impressed by the very active, very open publishing community of Toronto…Hopefully, next year, when [the] Frankfurt [Book Fair] comes to an end, some of you will have this new international industry event in Canada to look forward to.”
- Riky Stock (Distinguished Guest, 2008), Frankfurt Book Fair
